“I”am just a thought
by Mushin J. Schilling

Talk at Der Bewegte Raum
March 20th, 2003

Who or what is here,
when you don’t think of yourself?
Are you unconscious,
when you don’t think of yourself?

What remains if you don’t think anything in particular?
Does the world disappear? Do you disappear?
No. Nothing disappears.
The ego is just a thought.

And when you don’t think…
Please, show it to me…
Show me your ego, without thinking of it!
Where is your problem, if you don’t keep it up?
Where is your story, your past,
if you don’t tell it to yourself or somebody else?
Who could possibly experience emptiness or silence,
when it is silent?
Where are you, when you’re listening to music?
_

And if the I is nothing
but a thought
a whole bunch of thoughts
what could it really accomplish, hmm?
A happy I?
Dissolution?
The I is nothing
but a conglomeration of thoughts.
Thoughts you can change
to be better thoughts.

Maybe it makes sense
to change your habits of thinking.
Eventually you’ll have better thoughts
more beautiful ones, possibly
maybe even wise thoughts.

But they are nothing but thoughts.
If you don’t cherish them,
if you don’t... what will happen to them?

They come and they go
and saying that is saying too much already.
If you don’t think
life is there – abundantly
energy is there – abundantly
everything is there
only you’re not.

You think yourself into existence.
But if you don’t do that
you’re simply here.

And there is no more separation.

The I is the only thing that is separated.

Because it rests on what it is – thoughts
and especially it rests upon thoughts about
what it doesn’t want to be:
a nobody.
